Description: .pref v1.0 is a single channel video that places a computer user inside a spatial rendition of an operating system and draws humorous tension from literalizing the physical indicators - buttons, shadows, folders, reflections - that help orient us to the otherwise abstract interface. The work borrows from the structure and orientation of silent comedies, favoring gags over narrative, while recasting OS GUIs as physical objects to upend our relationship to the interface. The title is a reference to .pref files, which an operating system uses to ‘remember’ users’ preferred adjustments - from the speed of a mouse click to the color of a window. Here, those preferences are transposed onto the body of the user, simultaneously making them part of the OS and highlighting their estrangement.
